Just to address the elephant in the room... no, I don't have OCD (twitch). But yes, I do color code my kids' stuff. Luggage, organizers, electronics, toothbrushes - you name it, it's color coded. No more confusion, no more fights over who left what out, and they're all happy because they got to pick their favorite colors. We're going on thirteen years of traveling as a family and the color coded stuff is at the top of my "good decisions" list. If you like the idea, don't throw out perfectly good gear, just keep colors in mind when it comes time to replace worn-out items.

My list of important features of travel items:

  • no single use or cheap items that end up in landfills

  • must be light enough for a kid to carry

  • no items requiring disposable batteries

  • everything must be easy to clean
